De verfilming van de roman van Nathanael West over de decadentie van Hollywood in de late jaren dertig is een briljant stukje filmkunst. Een bijzonder inzichtelijk werk, krachtig in zijn presentatie en visueel verbluffend. Regisseur John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Marathon Man) is magistraal in het creëren van een wereld van platinablondines, hanengevechten, glamour en verstoorde dromen. Hij balanceert constant op het randje van seksueel en fysiek gevaar en dit leidt uiteindelijk tot een schokkende climax. Oscar® nominaties gingen naar Burgess Meredith en cameraman Conrad Hall.
